Savannah JEA Orcas Swim Club

Welcome to the Orcas! The Savannah JEA Swim Club is a social and competitive swim club for ages 6-18 that competes against other competitive swim teams or clubs throughout the country. Our inaugural season will consist of virtual meets organized by the Swim Team manager and Health & Wellness Director as well as various other “competitions” organized through the Aquatics Department.

Parents will not be able to watch these virtual meets in-person but we will be sharing live stream videos of swimmers to a private Facebook group that can only be accessed by parents/guardians of the swimmers. Team results will be shared through this platform as well. This team will run from December 1 - February 26th and registration will run on a month-to-month basis. You only need to commit to one month at a time and can join at the start of any month as long as there are open spots available.

Our experienced coaching/instructor staff works with each swimmer throughout the season on swimming fundamentals, techniques, endurance and cultivating a great team environment! We encourage and welcome all swimmers to try out for the team. Swimmers will be evaluated based on their individual ability to swim Freestyle, Backstroke, Breaststroke and Butterfly. The ability to dive is preferred but not mandatory to make the team.

Who can participate?

All swimmers between the ages of 6-18 will be allowed to join but must pass our “tryout/swim test” first. Children under the age of 6 who are currently enrolled in our swim lessons may be offered the chance to participate as well with the recommendation of their swim instructor. This simply ensures the children are at a skill level that will allow them to feel successful on this team. It will also allow us to group children with other children at a similar skill level.

The swim test includes:

Savannah JEA Developmental Swimmers: Must be able to swim freestyle 25 yards unassisted

Savannah JEA Competitive Swimmers: Must be able to swim freestyle 50 yards and Backstroke 25 yards unassisted

Meet Our Coaches

Theresa Unitescu

Miss Theresa is a long time resident of Savannah who began teaching swim lessons 25 years ago. Theresa took her love of teaching swim lessons and built her own private swim lesson business where she served countless families in the area for 10 years before joining the team at the Savannah JEA. Miss Theresa shares her life in Savannah with her husband, Michael, their six children, and six grandchildren.

Chris Cotton

Chris is a career educator with 20 years of experience as a swim instructor/lifeguard. Starting in 1999 at The Prospect Park YMCA as a lifeguard he quickly (3 years later) advanced to the position of Aquatics Director. Chris wanted to further his teaching skills and left the pool for the classroom. Working as an Early Childhood Educator and Art Director he found himself constantly back in the pool teaching private lessons. This was a realization for him. He must swim. In 2018 he started his own learn-to-swim company in Springfield MA, as well as his hometown of Brooklyn, NY. After relocating to GA he's looking to jump right in and make a splash at the JEA!
